Ghana

Ghana has roughly twice the per capita output of the poorest countries in West Africa. Even so, Ghana remains heavily dependent on international financial and technical assistance. After recently celebrating 50 years of independence, Ghana is on the way to becoming a model for African progress, but still has several tough problems facing the economy and its people.

Global Mamas

Global Mamas is an organization that enhances the international marketplace with unique, high-quality, African-made handmade apparel and at the same time provides sustainable livelihoods for women andn girls in Ghana. Working with strictly woman-owned businesses, they promote traditional styles such as batik and are committed to the environment by using recycled materials such as recycled glass beads. Women are provided a living wage over 10 times Ghana's minimum wage, women are paid up-front for completed products and receive financial assistance through a raw materials revolving loan fund. Women such as Juliana Mustafa (Julie's House of Batik) have been able to send their children to school, hire new employees, support extended family, and expand their businesses.

African Creations

Owned and operated by a Ghanian, African Creations provides a worldwide market for various artisans handcrafts mostly from Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire by purchasing their goods to distribute exclusively to stores in the developed countries. As a certified Fair Trade Federation member, African Creations guarantees not only that artisans were paid a fair price for their products, but a living wage that will allow them to bring them out of poverty. The four types of wood used are sustainable, and the products carved from the wood and other materials preserve cultures and traditions of the African peoples of these nations.
