Since 1996, Gambians have been experiencing nominal political stability, although military checkpoints and undertones of rebel activity are still prevalent throughout the country. As the country continues to stabilize and increase education, environmental hazards such as excessive litter and water-borne diseases and malaria remain a constant threat to the quality of life. The country remains highly dependent on foreign aid and intervention currently. Although a large part of the population lives on less than $1 per day, the structure of the country makes it very hard to accurately know exactly what percentage of the population lives below the poverty line.
