Although the development of cocoa production for export and foreign investment made Côte d'Ivoire one of the most prosperous of the tropical African states, that did not protect it from political turmoil. The country currently suffers not only from political unrest but from sewage contamination and deforestation (most of the country's forests - once the largest in West Africa - have been heavily logged). With more than 2/3 of the population dependent on agriculture, and amidst an AIDS epidemic, nearly 40% of the country lives below the poverty line. Source: CIA Factbook (2007) |
