This second-largest South American nation and its nearly 40 million citizens sit among an amazingly diverse geographical landscape. Even with environmental problems such as deforestation, air and water pollution plaguing the industrializing economy, Argentina is a emerging as world leader in setting voluntary greenhouse gas targets. And although Argentina was one of the world's wealthiest countries 100 years ago, it suffered during most of the twentieth century from recurring economic crises and mounting external debt. An estimated 31% of the population currently lives under the poverty line.
