The Urban Frog to Promote Fair Trade

A deli sits on a quiet corner in the heart of Broadway in downtown Green Bay. But when you enter under the purple awning and are awakened by the bold, urban colors of the wall and sleekly designed ultramodern tables and furniture, you'll feel like you're really in the midst of New York - only with a totally earthly and, well, "un-urban" twist.

Truly like an "Urban Frog," deli owner Terry Wojcik strives to serve things "Fresh From Mother Nature." All natural, organic, earth-friendly and health-conscious meals and specialty drinks comprise the hand-drawn chalk menu. And now they'll expand their environmental offerings with a display of recycled and hand made crafts from the hands of women in Gambia, Ghana, and The Philippines.

These items will include an assortment of recycled plastic purses and are part of an international movement called Fair Trade and specifically, part of Worldgoods Gambian Fair Trade Initiative. Even the smallest coin purse recycles about 10 shopping-size plastic bags and the largest can recycle up to 30 bags. Cleaning these poor, rural villages is extremely vital to the health and well being of children, livestock, and gardens in villages like Njau, Gambia. The income generated from making these purses is also instrumental in improving the standard of life and creating a sense of confidence and community among the women who recycle and crochet them.

Other items for sale at The Urban Frog will include hand batiked aprons from the Global Mamas, and recycled juice box tote bags from PREDA.

Worldgoods Fair Trade is excited for the upcoming display launch, and we'll have a booth there from 4-8 p.m. each Wednesday night. Even if you're unable to come at that time, The Urban Frog is a great spot to hit for a lunch - one that's unique, and healthy for both people and planet. Visit the Frog's website now!
